Tips for Being Green in the Kitchen

Nowadays, it seems that more and more people worldwide are trying to make a difference in their lives by starting with making small changes in their kitchen. So, are you looking for some easy green living advice? Know that there are simpler ways to go green, without having to spend excessive amount of money. Here’s how to get it started.

Recycle plastic bags

Plastic bags have a negative impact on the environment and that’s no secret. Make an effort to be more Eco-friendly by recycling plastic bags. This way, you’ll manage to reduce waste and help fight pollution. Before going shopping at the supermarket, bring your own shopping bags, otherwise you’ll end up filling your kitchen drawer with even more plastic bags. When you have too many, reuse them for different purposes, to protect your hands when cleaning, as shoe protectors or bin bags, etc.

Limit food waste

Limiting the food waste is probably the best green living advice that we can give to anyone, and it is the easiest advice to put into practice. Make a list before you go shopping, otherwise you’ll have to buy more food than you’ve pictured yourself buying. However, if your fridge runs out of space and you have nowhere else to store your leftovers you can try several solution. One would be to store them in the freezer in plastic bags while the other is to use them to make different types of dishes. You can make delicious meals with leftover raw veggies and fruits. Another great tip is to use them as fertilizer for your garden.

Save water

Did you know that washing the dishes in a dishwasher can help you save 40% more water, rather than washing them by hand? Therefore, if you want to preserve the environment and have lower costs on the utility bills, consider investing in a dishwasher. However, avoid using a dishwasher to wash small loads of dishes because you’ll end up using more energy. Wait until you have a full load and then you can use your dishwasher. As a word of advice: look for a dishwasher that features an “economy” cycle that can help you save water and energy at the same time.

Cook faster and more efficient

Another great way to save energy is to use a microwave oven for cooking smaller portions of food, rather than heating them in a large oven. This way, you can use from 30% to 50% less energy.  If you don’t have a microwave oven, now might be the right time to buy one. Carefully research several models on, see which are the main features that you would need, and invest in a quality oven. Another benefit of owning a microwave oven is that it helps you cook food much faster, so you have more time to spend on other more important house chores.
